Serbian President Announces Early Parliamentary Elections

Because of the protests in the country.

Serbia's leadership has agreed to give in to the demonstrators and hold early elections for the parliament, whose term expires in December 2027.

President Alexander Vucic said he did so "out of respect for the protesters' demands." The date of the election will be decided at a later date. "When? That will be decided by the competent authorities. And the people will show in the elections what policy they support," the head of state added. Representatives of the protesters called for the vote to be held as soon as possible and promised their own list of candidates.

A close aide to Vucic told Financial Times, however, that the elections are likely to take place "not before the end of next year at the earliest."

Mass anti-government protests were again held in Serbia last weekend, marking the anniversary of the collapse of a canopy at the Novi Sad train station - 16 people were killed then. Demonstrators believe that corruption and nepotism at the top of the government led to the tragedy and demand the dissolution of parliament and Vucic's resignation. On November 1, 39 thousand citizens took part in the action in Novi Sad.
