SBU Attack On Tuapse: Oil Spill Discovered In The Black Sea

Ukrainian military attacked the tankers.

An attack by Ukraine's armed forces on the Tuapse oil terminal led to an oil spill. This conclusion was reached by BBC based on an analysis of NASA satellite imagery conducted after the strike on the facility on the night of November 2. The oil slick, according to the images, stretched about 3.6 kilometers from the terminal.

The Tuapse oil terminal, located 8 kilometers from the port of Tuapse, exports oil products from the Tuapse refinery and Rosneft's Samara group of refineries. In January-September, the total volume of deliveries amounted to 7.1 million tons, Reuters writes. The Krasnodar region's operational headquarters confirmed damage to the terminal's infrastructure and two foreign vessels after the attack.

This is not the first oil spill in the Black Sea in recent times. On December 15, 2024, after a tanker crash in the Kerch Strait, at least 4,000 tons of fuel oil fell into the water area.

Liquidation of the consequences of that spill is still ongoing. The head of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation Alexander Kozlov stated that the work on cleaning up the coast is planned to be completed by May 2026. However, experts expressed doubts about these terms: a representative of the All-Russian Society for Nature Conservation, Sergei Ostakh, estimated the period of complete elimination of the consequences at least three years, and a member of the Commission on Ecology of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Lifantiev, argued that the restoration of the Black Sea coast could take from five to ten years. Rosprirodnadzor stated in the summer that it was impossible to completely collect the spilled fuel.
