Every last molecule.
US officials have been traveling to European countries to promote American energy sources instead of Russian ones, the Financial Times newspaper reported, citing sources.
According to the newspaper, the U.S. side is trying to destroy "every last molecule" of Russian gas on the European market.
It is noted that the campaign of U.S. officials coincided with the attempt of oil trader Gunvor to acquire foreign assets of Russia's Lukoil, against which the U.S. imposed sanctions. This caused difficulties for the oil trader, as the media at the time focused on the company's past ties to Russia.
Gunvor was named by Lukoil as a potential buyer, but the US Treasury Department warned that it would not grant the company a business license until the war in Ukraine was over.
Before 2014, Gunvor was co-owned by Russian businessman Gennady Timchenko, who sold his stake - 43.5% of Gunvor's shares - to the company's other major shareholder, Torbjörbjörn Tornqvist, the day before US sanctions were imposed on him. The latter received 86% of shares for $6.6 billion. Tornqvist is now chairman of the board of directors.
It is important that despite control over Gunvor, the U.S. authorities remained wary of its possible ties to Moscow. Daniel Fried, a former sanctions policy coordinator, said:
"Gunvor was well known to anyone who was familiar with Russia under Putin."
The publication reminds that the United States has been officially demanding that allies stop buying Russian gas and oil. American delegations at talks with other countries every time raise the issue of energy supplies from Russia and Iran.
