Andrei Voynich: Lukashenko Understands Only The Language Of Force
Andrei Voynich

How Lithuania should respond to the regime's hybrid attacks.

Lithuania holds a hard line against Lukashenko's regime, responding to hybrid attacks by weather probes and instrumentalized migration by closing the border.

Is Vilnius choosing the right tactics? This is the question Charter97.org asked the coordinator of the civil campaign "European Belarus" Andrei Voynich.

- Of course, it is right. I think we can even talk to him a little bit tougher, because he understands anything only from the position of force. In this case, economic pressure with direct negotiations is very effective, as practice has shown.

I and dozens of other political prisoners were released only thanks to active and consistent pressure on Lukashenko's regime. These actions should be continued until the full release of absolutely all political prisoners and the cessation of the recruitment of new hostages. Until then, there should be no relaxation.

- Should Vilnius link any negotiations not only to the cessation of hybrid attacks, but also to the release of political prisoners?

- Of course, because these are actually links in the same chain. Lukashenko tyrannizes not only his own people, but also all neighboring nations, i.e. he is a bloodsucker who cannot stop.

Correspondingly, it is necessary to stop repression both internally and externally. In no case should he be allowed to feel at ease and dictate his terms. He must realize that there are other people's conditions, other people's rules of the game, and he is obliged to play by these rules, because there is a concept of international law. In international law, everyone must comply with the rules of the game.

The Lithuanian government should not accept the fact that just a few dozen kilometers from their capital there are concentration camps, where Belarusians are tortured and killed just for their desire for freedom. Vilnius should help Belarus to become free. And the first step to this should be the release of political prisoners.

- Lukashenko's regime holds more than 1,100 Lithuanian trucks standing on Belarusian territory as "hostages." What retaliatory measures should Lithuania take to stop the blackmail and get its entrepreneurs back?

- To begin with, it would be possible to stop completely, without any warnings, the transit of any goods from Belarus through Lithuania, up to stopping the movement of goods to the Kaliningrad region. This would indeed be a strong move against both dictator Lukashenko and the Kremlin. After all, the Belarusian dictator is Putin's puppet and is completely subordinate to him.

It is necessary to find out what property Lukashenko's regime and his "purses" have in Lithuania. If Lukashenko has the right to take hostages from Lithuania and its property, if Belarusian political prisoners are not enough for him and he takes hostages from neighboring countries, it means that it is necessary to take hostages, again, some real estate or enterprises located in Lithuania. For example, there is a sanatorium "Belarus" in Druskininkai, around which there were many scandals - why not?

It can be sold, and the money can be divided between all the hostages and former Belarusian political prisoners when they are released. I think that even the intention to make such a step on the part of Lithuania will sober up the dictator. It will be a rather effective measure that can influence the result of possible negotiations.
