Russia is trying to surround Pokrovsk in order to further seize the entire Donetsk region.
Russian troops are conducting a large-scale offensive operation near Pokrovsk and are pulling together significant forces to break through the Ukrainian defense line. This was stated in an interview with The New York Post by the AFU Commander-in-Chief Alexander Syrsky.
He said that this is a "strategically important city."
"The situation on the front line is really tense, the enemy is conducting a strategic offensive operation. They have gathered most of the forces, creating an advantage in an attempt to break through our defense line and capture this area," he explained.
Syrsky denied the claim of Russian propagandists about the alleged fall of Pokrovsk and the encirclement of Ukrainian units. According to him, during the September counterattack, the AFU inflicted significant losses on the Russian army and liberated 188 km², 248.7 km² were cleared of DRGs.
The material also says that of the approximately 700,000 troops now on Ukrainian territory, Moscow transferred about 150,000 occupants to Pokrovsk; large mechanized groups and four brigades of marines were involved in the offensive.
Syrsky told the publication that Russia's goal is to surround Pokrovsk and neighboring towns from the north, south and east, cut off supply lines and force the remnants of the civilian population to evacuate in order to then carry out a "final gambit" to seize the entire Donetsk region.
"Our task is to make sure that the level of mobilization of people will be equal to or less than the number of losses they will suffer. They have been carrying out these active assault actions for two months now without any material success," the commander-in-chief said.
The AFU General Staff on the morning of November 10 reported 265 military clashes on the front over the course of the day, with nearly 100 of them occurring in the Pokrovsky direction.
