Russian Regions Are Drowning In Garbage

Why did the collapse occur?

Russia wants to extend the operation of unauthorized landfills until 2029.

According to Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service.

In Russia, at least 30 regions lack landfills for solid waste disposal. Therefore, the authorities want to extend the term of operation of unauthorized landfills for another three years - until 2029. Previously, this term has already been extended from 2023 to 2026.

The most affected are "hard-to-reach and remote regions", in particular the Amur Region, Yakutia, Kamchatka and Krasnoyarsk Krai.

In many places there are absolutely no facilities for waste disposal, and harsh climatic conditions make the construction of new landfills extremely expensive and time-consuming.

The closure of old landfills in 2026 could cause a "garbage collapse", but there are no funds to build new ones.

At the end of 2023, the area of landfills in Russia exceeded four million hectares - an area comparable to the Netherlands or Switzerland.
