Bloomberg: Russian "shadow Fleet" Tankers Were Issued False Flags

The EU is preparing sanctions.

The European Union has proposed sanctions restrictions on three companies that provided false flags to under-sanctioned oil tankers of Russia's "shadow fleet," writes Bloomberg.

According to documents in the possession of the publication, these firms provided false flags of Aruba, Curacao and St. Maarten to at least eight sanctioned vessels.

It is noted that these small island countries are not included in the so-called Paris register of official flags for ships, that is, they do not provide such a service. It is reported that in May, the Netherlands warned the International Maritime Organization that the companies were providing "fake certificates" on behalf of St. Maarten.

The publication informed that the proposed restrictions against the three firms could be included in the 19th package of sanctions that the EU member states are currently discussing. The bloc wants to reduce Moscow's oil revenues with these restrictions.

The sanctions package will reportedly include another 120 vessels of the "shadow fleet," which would increase their total number on the list to more than 560. The restrictions may also affect several entities in third countries that facilitate Russia's energy trade. The publication noted that in order to impose sanctions, it is necessary to get the support of all member states.
