Estonia Responded To Merkel's Scandalous Words

The former German chancellor's words cast a shadow over her entire reign.

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel's words about blaming Poland and the Baltic states for the development of Russia's war in Ukraine cast a shadow on the entire period of her rule, the chairman of the Estonian parliament's foreign affairs committee (riigikogu) Marko Mihkelson said on social network X.

"This is a new and, unfortunately, extremely unpleasant moment from Angela Merkel: to accuse the Baltic states and Poland of unleashing Russia's imperial war," he said." he noted.

Merkel said in an interview with Hungarian publication Partizan that Poland and the Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) in 2021 opposed her proposed new format of direct dialog between the European Union and Vladimir Putin on the Ukrainian issue.

She said these countries feared the inability to develop a unified EU policy toward Russia, which ultimately blocked diplomatic attempts to resolve tensions. According to Merkel, this refusal partly influenced subsequent developments.

"Times have changed now, and we need to think about what is the best position to take in order to achieve peace," she said. The former chancellor also expressed the opinion that Europe needs to show real deterrence and support Ukraine.
