A large anti-government protest is gathering in the center of the Georgian capital in parallel with local elections, "Novosti-Georgia" reported.
Columns of protesters representing various social groups are moving toward Freedom Square, where a stage has been set up. Rustaveli Avenue adjacent to the parliament and neighboring streets are blocked.
Protesters carry national flags, posters with anti-government slogans, photos of imprisoned opposition activists, politicians and journalists, occasionally chanting "Revolution". One can also see EU and US flags.
Residents of Georgian regions in organized columns of cars also arrived in Tbilisi to participate.
Opera singer Paata Burchuladze was declared the main organizer. In addition to him, the organizing committee of the actions of the opposition parties "United National Movement", "Agmashenebeli Strategy", former deputy chief of the Georgian General Staff, Colonel Lasha Beridze. In general, eight opposition political forces co-organized the rally.
Special forces have been on duty in the courtyard of the parliament since early morning, and problems with mobile communications have been noticed in the government quarter.
