Atlantic Council: Ukraine Teaches NATO How To Defend Itself Against Russian Drones

The Ukrainian experience is changing the rules of war and helping Europe.

Ukraine is becoming a drone superpower and teaching NATO how to defend itself against Russia's hybrid warfare, writes the Atlantic Council.

Recent incursions by Russian drones across Europe have underscored Ukraine's growing role as a leader in the use of drones in warfare. Countries including Denmark and Poland have launched joint training programs with Ukrainian instructors in a bid to learn from Kiev's experience in countering drones.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Ukraine is now "the only expert in the world on countering drones," while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte added that sharing knowledge with Kiev is "very important" for Europe's collective security.

Ukraine has been actively using drones both on the frontline, creating the so-called "Drone Wall," and for operations inside Russia, hitting oil refineries and logistics centers, which has led to fuel shortages in some regions.

The innovative use of maritime drones has changed the balance of power in the Black Sea: Ukrainian drones have broken the Russian blockade, forcing Russian ships to withdraw to safe ports, and some drones have even been equipped with anti-aircraft missiles to counter helicopters.

The former commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Valeriy Zaluzhny, emphasized that drone innovation and technology remain key to countering Russian aggression.

"Ukraine compensates for its relative lack of resources by introducing military innovations," he said.

Many NATO countries have already begun cooperating with Ukraine, with the UK preparing mass production of interceptor drones and Romania planning joint production for domestic use and export to allies. A Ukrainian delegation is in talks with the United States this week to share combat experience and technology.

Analysts say Russia's invasion was the world's first full-scale drone war, and Ukraine's unique experience makes it a key NATO partner and an indispensable ally in protecting Europe from modern threats.
