After Trump's sanctions.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to "remove Russian oil and gas from the world market" as part of efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
As Politico, Starmer held a meeting of Ukrainian allies aimed at building on U.S. President Donald Trump's biggest intervention against Russian dictator Vladimir Putin when he imposed sanctions on two of Russia's biggest oil companies.
The publication noted that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who joined talks between Starmer and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky immediately after meeting with Trump in Washington, expressed hope that U.S. sanctions against major Russian oil companies would "deprive them of revenue and significantly increase pressure on Putin."
Starmer, Zelensky and Rutte met in London along with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her Dutch counterpart Dick Schoof ahead of a virtual meeting of a "coalition of the willing," which was joined for the first time by Japan.
The publication emphasized that the discussion was sharply focused on increasing pressure on Putin to resume negotiations.
Key Goals
Zelensky cited two key goals in his meeting with European leaders: capitalizing on Trump's new sanctions and keeping the issue of long-range weapons on the table.
The publication's source familiar with the discussion noted that Surgutneftegaz, Putin's personal company, has not yet been sanctioned, and predicted: "If they managed to squeeze the whole Russian" oil industry, they would have a chance to get Putin to the negotiating table."
The senior British official separately added that the US action was "a really important new step" and "it's always more effective when countries act together."
In addition, the publication's source familiar with the talks said long-range missiles should be part of the European and U.S. effort.
"Everyone saw how Putin reacted to the prospect of Tomahawks. But then the Americans dropped the idea, and Putin quickly abandoned diplomacy," the source emphasized.
Diplomatic Drama
The publication noted that the US announcement of sanctions against Rosneft and Lukoil marked a shift in the White House's stance.
Trump, who had previously said he would not impose new sanctions unless Europe refused Russian oil and gas supplies, told reporters, "I just felt it was time."
War in Ukraine: negotiations
A few days ago, US authorities imposed serious sanctions against Russia for the first time. This became possible after Secretary of State Marco Rubio, rather than special envoy Steven Whitkoff, became responsible for negotiations with the Kremlin in the White House.
In addition, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte noted that the last meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump was not a failure. He expressed the opinion that the talks in the White House "went well, were successful and exactly what we needed."
