FT: Canada Has Made An Unexpected U-turn Over Trump's Trade War

The country expects to develop trade relations with Asia.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is trying to strengthen economic ties with China and India amid growing tensions in trade relations with the United States. About it writes Financial Times.

It is noted that Carney went on a large-scale tour of Asian countries. He said he intends to establish trade relations with countries in the region.

"We can't control U.S. trade policy. What we can control is the development of new partnerships and opportunities, particularly with the economic giants of Asia," the Canadian prime minister told reporters before traveling to Asia.

The publication shared that Carney traveled to Malaysia for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, which will begin as early as October 26, and will then visit Singapore before heading to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in South Korea on October 29.

The move was the culmination of trade disputes between the US and Canada, the publication stressed. The journalists recalled that earlier Washington imposed duties on Canadian steel, aluminum and cars, and Ottawa responded with its own countermeasures.

The publication noted that on October 23, US President Donald Trump announced the termination of all trade negotiations with Canada. The journalists explained that the reason was most likely an advertising campaign launched by the province of Ontario, which used archival footage from a speech by the 40th U.S. President Ronald Reagan. The footage showed the former U.S. leader criticizing customs tariff policies.

Trump called the ad "fraudulent." He also accused Canada of trying to influence the decision of U.S. courts.

The publication added that Carney is expected to meet with Chinese leader Si Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC summit. Business Council of Canada President Goldie Hyder told reporters in comments that he expects "concrete steps that will open up new markets and attract investment."
