Will China stop Russia?

US President Donald Trump has said he will discuss ending the Russia-Ukraine war with Chinese leader Si Jinping at an upcoming meeting.

The White House press office reports.

In an interaction with the press, Trump was asked what influence he would like China to have in stopping Russia. In response, the US president hinted that he would like Beijing to influence Moscow's stance on Ukraine.

"Well, I would really like China to help us with Russia. We have imposed very heavy sanctions on Russia. I think those sanctions ... they're very tough. They're very strong. But I would like China to help us. As you know, I have a good relationship with President Xi... we're going to meet. We're going to have a good meeting... I think we're going to make some good agreements. One of the issues... - is the relationship between Russia and Ukraine," Trump said.

He added that 7,000 people die weekly in this war, emphasizing that "we will definitely discuss it."

"He (Xi Jinping - ed.) also wants this to end," the US president said.

Trump was also asked if he fears that recent US sanctions are too strong and will back Putin into a corner.

"No, I don't think so. We'll see what happens. I think he wants an end to the war," Trump replied.
