"We Are Proud That The Belarusian Land Gives Birth To Such People"

Andrzej Poczobut commands respect and gives hope with his resilience.

One of the activists of the Union of Poles in Belarus, journalist-political prisoner Andrzej Poczobut has been awarded the Andrei Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by the European Parliament.

Journalist Dmitry Lupacz, who was well acquainted with Andrzej Poczobut, considers the award absolutely deserved, reports "Radio Racyja":

- And who then, if not Andrzej? For his resilience. In my opinion, he is one of the best Belarusian journalists, who has been imprisoned for his views. And yet, despite all the harsh conditions, he has not changed them, which causes respect. And gives some hope not only for Poles, but also for Belarusians. And there is a reason to be proud that our land can give birth to such people.

Andrzej Poczobut, journalist and leader of the Union of Poles of Belarus, liquidated by the authorities, was detained in 2021. In February 2023, he was sentenced to 8 years in prison on articles on incitement of hatred and calls for actions against national security (Articles 130 and 361 of the Criminal Code). In 2024, Andrzej Poczobut became an honorary citizen of Warsaw.
