"We Need To Shatter Putin's Ego."
Ben Wallace

General Wallace told us how to do it.

Former British Defense Minister Ben Wallace has reminded Russian President Vladimir Putin of the importance of Crimea. To influence the Russian Federation, he said, it is worth turning the peninsula into an unlivable terrain.

To make Crimea "unlivable," the West must provide Ukraine with long-range strike capabilities, Wallace said during the Warsaw Security Forum 2025 international conference. The former British government official recalled that the peninsula is a sacred place for Putin, the "Holy Mountain." The Kremlin chief will be forced to end the war if he sees that he has lost something important, he implored during a speech in Poland on September 30.

Wallace responded to a question about how the West could help Ukraine, as Ukrainians feel like they have been left to fend for themselves and are fighting their own battles. The former minister explained that the Crimean bridge should be destroyed to make the situation on the peninsula as difficult as possible. Only in this case Putin will make the necessary conclusions: to achieve this, we need long-range missiles, such as Taurus.

"We need to help Ukraine to have a long range, to give opportunities to make Crimea unlivable. We need to strangle life in Crimea. If we do that, Putin will realize he has a lot to lose if the place becomes unlivable. There is no way it can work, this bridge - we need a Taurus from Germany. We need to destroy this damned bridge because it's Putin's ego, it's a statue, it's Putin's ego. If we do that, Putin will suddenly realize that he has something to lose," the Briton stressed.

The former official also described what Crimea and Ukraine are for Putin. In his opinion, the Kremlin head treats the peninsula as a "Holy Mountain" and is gripped by the desire to dominate Ukraine. And it is these two desires that motivate the Russian president.

"We need to remember what motivates Putin. Putin is in love with the idea of dominating Ukraine, the idea of taking over Ukraine. Crimea is Russia ... Crimea he declared in 2014," Wallace explained.

Another question the British ex-minister answered was why NATO shoots down Russian drones with $1,500 missiles for half a million dollars and does not use other means, as Ukraine has shown. Wallace confirmed that Western militaries "still want to buy million-dollar aircraft carriers and missiles" and "ignore the lessons of new ways of warfare." The West has technologies that can meet the challenges of 21st century warfare and "we are still ignoring them."
