The pillar of smoke could be seen from afar.

What is known
On Wednesday morning, footage of a fire at a local oil refinery appeared in Yaroslavl's publicks.
"There is trouble at the refinery - a fire and a huge column of smoke," complained a Russian Telegram channel.
At the same time, Russian propaganda was trying hard to downplay the problem. For example, as the head of the Center for Occupation Studies Petr Andryushchenko noted, local media initially spread reports that the refinery was allegedly holding "exercises as close to reality as possible."
"The drills," he noted, looked very epic.

"The agenda" changed after Yaroslavl Region Governor Mikhail Evraev acknowledged the fact of the fire. He declared the incident "technogenic in nature".
"Today a fire broke out on the territory of an oil refinery. Residents were concerned that it could have been the result of an enemy drone attack. But what happened has nothing to do with that. No UAV attacks have been recorded today. The fire is man-made. Special services are already working on its elimination," the regional official "consoled" the residents of the "gasoline station" country, who are already facing fuel shortages.

According to the independent Russian publication ASTRA, the Novo-Yaroslavl Refinery (Yaroslavnefteorgsintez, YANOS, Slavneft-YANOS) is on fire.

"According to public data, it is an oil refinery of fuel and oil profile. It is among the five largest Russian refineries in terms of hydrocarbon feedstock processing volume and is the largest oil refinery in the Central Federal District of Russia ... The reasons for the fire are still unknown," the report said.
A ASTRA also added that YANOS is the main refining asset of the vertically integrated company PJSC NGK Slavneft, 99.7% of which is controlled on a parity basis by PJSC Rosneft and PJSC Gazprom.
The Ukrainian OSINT-researchers also analyze the shots from Yaroslavl.

So, Exilenova+ assumed that the BT-6 unit was on fire.
"Vacuum fuel oil distillation unit (BT-6). Annual design capacity after modernization is more than 6.2 million tons per year. Modernization of the BT-6 unit (Slavneft-YANOS, Yaroslavl) was planned and its documentation was approved in April 2025 by the chairman of the state expertise," Exilenova+ noted.
