The U.S. will strike where it will be particularly felt.

U.S. President Donald Trump will increase pressure on Russian ruler Vladimir Putin by shifting from a "carrot" to "stick" policy.

Finland President Alexander Stubb said this, according to Politico.

He said it's only a matter of timing when the US will strike Putin where it will be particularly tangible.

"Having seen that carrots rarely work with the Russians, he has moved to the stick stage. Now the only question is how big this stick will be," Stubb noted.

The publication notes that this assessment stands in stark contrast to the skepticism in some European capitals, where Trump's criticism of Putin was seen as empty statements.

A sophisticated "whip" for Putin

Stubb, who maintains personal contact with the US president through a shared passion for golf, has more reason to trust his intentions.

When asked what exactly could be a "whip" for Putin, Stubb jokingly said it could be a "club," alluding to Trump's rich arsenal of tools of influence.

He said President Trump is "working, if not around the clock, every day to end the war" and "has 14 clubs in his bag."

The possible measures include: stronger sanctions, including secondary sanctions, higher tariffs and greater use of U.S. weapons capable of hitting targets deep in Russian territory.

"You don't have to read 'The Art of the Deal' to understand Trump's negotiating style. It is unconventional but effective," Stubb emphasized.

Be patient

The Finnish president warned that if Putin continues to kill civilians in Ukraine after his scheduled meeting with Trump in Alaska on August 15, the American leader will react strongly.

Calling himself a "realistic optimist," Stubb urged Ukraine supporters to be patient.

"Had the opportunity to work closely with President Trump over the past few months. Perhaps optimism is sometimes based on intuition, but the facts on the ground show that we are moving in the right direction," the Finnish leader said.
