The U.S. Government Shutdown Has Begun For The First Time Since 2019

Government shutdown.

The United States government has shut down for the first time in seven years. The reason was the failure of Congress to approve a budget in time to fund a number of federal agencies.

It was reported by CNN and Bloomberg.

The federal government officially shut down after a divided Congress failed to pass a funding bill. It is the first government shutdown since 2019.

Republican and Democratic leaders both publicly and privately insist they will not be blamed for the funding shutdown.

Republicans are demanding that Democrats simply agree to extend current funding for another seven weeks. Democrats refuse to do so without significant concessions in exchange for their votes to pass any funding bill in the Senate.

Senators left the Capitol on the evening of Sept. 30, Washington time, in a state of deep uncertainty about how long the shutdown might last.

On the morning of Oct. 1, the Senate is scheduled to vote again on the same funding plan from Republicans. Republican leaders promise to bring it to a vote day after day until enough Democrats relent and agree to reopen the government.
