Ukraine Halts Transit Of Russian Gas To The EU

This is a historic event.

The Gazprom company reported that as of 8 am (Minsk and Moscow time), gas supplies through the territory of Ukraine have been completely stopped. Later, Kyiv confirmed this information.

The reason was the expiration of the transit agreements signed in 2019 with the Ukrainian companies Naftogaz and the Ukrainian Gas Transmission System Operator. In a press release, Gazprom stated that due to Ukraine's refusal to extend these agreements, the company lost the opportunity to continue transporting gas through Ukrainian territory.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy officially announced that same morning that the transit of Russian gas to the European Union had been stopped. "Ukraine has duly informed its foreign partners about this," the department said in a statement.

"We have stopped the transit of Russian gas, this is a historic event. Russia is losing markets, it will suffer financial losses. Europe has already decided to abandon Russian gas. And the European Repower EU initiative envisages exactly what Ukraine has done today,” emphasized Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko.

This gas pipeline, leading from Russia to Europe, crosses Ukraine and enters Slovakia. Bratislava counted on continued supplies of Russian gas and called on Ukraine to extend the contracts. Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico previously stated that in response to Kyiv’s termination of gas transit from January 1, Slovakia could stop exporting electricity to Ukraine.

At the same time, the European Union reported that it was ready to stop the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.
