Military Expert: Lukashenka Is Besieged By Agents From All Sides
OLEKSIY MELNYK

The dictator is in a much worse situation than Yanukovych once was.

Director of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation Christopher Ray said that there are many opponents of the war in Russian intelligence and the U.S. would like to talk to them. What might be of interest to the American intelligence services, and what can they offer to the Russian agents?

Oleksiy Melnyk, co-director of foreign policy and international security programs at the Razumkov Center, First Assistant to the Minister of Defense of Ukraine (2005-2008), military expert, answered this and other questions for the Charter97.org website.

— Ukrainian intelligence has said that it has its own agents in Putin's entourage and that the Kremlin is looking for a successor to the Russian dictator. Can the Ukrainian special services somehow influence the process of change of power in Russia?

— I can’t say to what extent the Ukrainian special services can significantly influence the solution of this issue. There are many facts of successful operations, but this level is difficult to assess.

— The FBI Director said that there are many opponents of the war in Russian intelligence and the United States would like to talk to them. What might be of interest to the American intelligence services, and what can they offer to the Russian agents?

— This is much more interesting. To paraphrase your question, the American intelligence agencies have something to offer in exchange for cooperation. Especially in a situation where many of the agents, and especially those who are outside the territory of Russia, are looking around, trying to find a lifeline.

The story that Putin does not like traitors very much, just inside this service, is another argument confirming that such operations can be successful.

— What important information can be passed in case of such recruitment?

— The recent case of the escape of one of the employees who was responsible for communications (we are talking about the FSO officer Gleb Karakulov, who worked with Putin — edit.) This is a technical worker, but what he said is very interesting and helps professional intelligence officers, analysts, let's say, put puzzle pieces together. This information can be used in planning further operations.

Next time it may not be just a technical intelligence officer, but with access to foreign agents, especially information on moles or chains that can lead to moles sitting inside the Western system itself. Of course, in today's, let's say, disastrous state of Russian agents in the West, this can put an end to it. At least in this part of intelligence, which is called human intelligence or undercover intelligence.

— Considering that even in Putin's entourage there are agents of foreign intelligence, how likely is it that a similar situation has developed around the Belarusian dictator?

— 99.9%. I come from the experience of how it was in Ukraine. For example, under Yanukovych (the fugitive ex-president of Ukraine — edit.), a certain Yakymenko was appointed head of the SSU. He had nothing Ukrainian about him, except for the surname ending with -ko. Moreover, he was once an officer in the Russian Armed Forces. Had “holes” in the biography. That is, it was an FSB agent appointed to head the Ukrainian special service.

This is just one of the examples, and now, the further we go, the more information and facts we have.

Lukashenka is besieged from all sides by these agents. By the way, if in the event of this man Yakymenko, Yanukovych, most likely, knew and gave the go-ahead for this, then I think that Lukashenka's situation is much worse.
