Verkhovna Rada Representative Demands Strengthening Sanctions Against Lukashenka's Entourage
Oleksandr Merezhko

He called to take more decisive action to release Belarusian political prisoners.

The other day it became known that political prisoner Ihar Losik cut his hands and throat in protest against the actions of the colony administration.

Member of the Committee on Foreign Relations of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Merezhko came up with a statement and condemned the persecution of Ihar Losik and called to take more decisive action to release Belarusian political prisoners.

“The imprisonment of Ihar Losik and his wife Darya on groundless and illegal decisions of the pro-Lukashenka court is one of the many shameful examples of authoritarian regime and cruelty of the illegitimate Belarusian authorities. We strongly condemn the repressive and punitive nature of the Belarusian system! We demand compliance with all standards of humane treatment of political prisoners in Belarus!

We are calling on the President and the Government of Ukraine to continue strengthening sanctions and pressure on representatives of the Belarusian authorities involved in crimes of aggression and human rights violations in Belarus!

We are calling on our European colleagues to join efforts to achieve the release of all political prisoners in Belarus and guarantee them the opportunity to leave the territory of this country!

Long Live Belarus!

Glory to Ukraine!” Mr Merezhko wrote on Facebook.

Ihar Losik's wife Darya is also illegally convicted by the Lukashenka regime. She was sentenced to imprisonment for 2 years in a correctional colony under the general regime.

Ihar Losik and Darya Losik have a four-year-old daughter, Paulina. Her grandparents are looking after her now.
