Look, He Can Barely Walk!
Iryna Khalip

Time is deadly.

Sometimes I think how humiliating it is for one particular person to know that all of Belarus watches his every appearance in public with unequivocal gloating curiosity: look, look, he can barely walk! He staggers; one holds him by hands; he limps and stumbles on the airplane ladder! Bingo! And no one is discussing what he said or did, whom he fired or whom he appointed. The country is only watching his decrepitude, his decay, his exhaustion. Nothing else matters.

And he could have lived the life of Riley. Outwitting the nation with his thirst for revenge, he could have done an elegant trick and spitefully flee to the Emirates on August 9, 2020, where he can travel freely and even be welcomed with some honors. And that's it: watch his smoke, threaten him with a tribunal, demand responsibility for everything. Bollocks to that, Belarusian avengers, stay in your swamps, while we have palm trees and young beauties, skyscrapers and yachts, fat purses and bank accounts here on the bay shore. And while the people are celebrating their victory, the whole government could have been shipped out with a few cargo flights. Yermoshina and Tertel, Karpenkov and Karaev, Massandra, and Kochanova, both "houses" and even the remains of the Kupala Theater headed by Nefedova.

There, in Dubai, they've already made up three artificial islands in recent years. Couldn't they have make up the fourth one especially for him for the money this man possesses? Yes, they could. Any whim, any project, any fantasy. Or one can go even further - the Persian Gulf geography does not the edge of the world. There are a huge number of islands in the oceans, which one can buy and equip to one's liking. Build Tsal Dir Bie, prisons, courts, the Palace of the Republic and a couple of factories. Factories are definitely needed, because they are good venues for cutting red ribbons and speaking before the crowds. By the way, the remnants of the Kupala Theater are needed to portray the popular masses. During the day, they will toil at the machines and greet their head with applause. In the evening, they will play amateur plays from collective farm life or about love. One can also use them for staged trials. One can't do without the enemies of the people. It's an indispensable part of Belarusian life. However, the remnants of Kupala Theater can be left alone. One can be satisfied with factories and amateur performances. Ministers and security officials can play enemies of the people and then can change the roles. Yermoshina and Tertel stay in jail for five years and the entire lower "house", then they are replaced by Kochanova and Massandra and the upper "house". However, prisons may not be built to save space and money, but put everyone in pits to make it look authentic, with respect for the local climate and traditions. However, these are details that are not so important. Oh yes, they should also create a re-entry commission, so that those who suddenly get fed up with this wonderful life and want to swim away, will be able to swim back. No one guarantees that they will swim back, but there has to be a commission.

And under these conditions, it was quite possible to create the illusion of supreme power, eternal youth and immortality in general. The hot climate was just right: the absence of seasons, the eternal summer, the scorching sun without any variety will not allow one to think about the brevity of life; the years will merge into one endless day. The military marches and shoots in the air; athletes run and jump; Tertel searches for enemies when he gets out of the pit; the remnants of the Kupala Theater artfully demonstrate nationwide love; Dorofeeva sings from a truck as she used to during the harvest season; Azarenok tells scary bedtime stories on TV. The night is full of stars; the sky is clear; no Russia is beside; no one puts pressure; no one sends their militaries. And Belarus is right here, not in those swampy, slushy places. Their sweetheart is held tight; she is taken away to live in luxury at the sea.

Isn't it a blessing? It's grace, of course. It's a peacefull and level life filled with safety, the seafood, and enough money for many generations. And nobody looks at his unsteady gait under a microscope; nobody discusses staggering and swaying in the wind; nobody notices every detail that demonstrates the inexorability of time. Time is not an opposition member; it is equally deadly to everyone, regardless of character traits and the number of transgressions. To stop it - or rather to create an illusion - is possible only by moving away to tropical islands, where there is no gledge. And he neglected such a chance available only for few. And that's all he needed - to board the plane on time.

Now, don't take it amiss. We are watching. And we see everything.
