‘Red Button’ Is A Myth’: Zhdanov Tells About Nuclear Briefcase Contents
OLEH ZHDANOV

Intelligence of Western countries will immediately know if the Russian Federation decides to use nuclear weapons.

The “red button” is a fabrication of the media, in a nuclear briefcase there are codes for bringing a nuclear warhead into combat state. And if Russian President Vladimir Putin dares to use nuclear weapons, Western intelligence agencies will immediately learn about the threat from Russia.

This was told by the Ukrainian military expert, reserve colonel Oleh Zhdanov in an interview with Gordon.

“The “red button” is a myth created by the media. The nuclear briefcase contains codes for bringing the nuclear warhead into combat state. And the procedure is multi-layered. If a failure occurs at one of the levels or it is not completed, then they will not reach the launcher or the means of applying the code ... And in view of the state of equipment in long-term storage, I think that nuclear warheads may also end up in the same condition. In addition, the Russian Federation produced a very small number (of nuclear warheads— edit.), mostly strategic ones. Meanwhile, tactical and operational-tactical charges were practically not produced in Russia,” Zhdanov said.

The expert notes that Western countries know the places where nuclear weapons are stored in Russia, since all of them have been verified under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Also, if the Russian Federation wants to use nuclear weapons, Western intelligence will immediately know about it.

“By the way, I always cite General (Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine) Kirylo Budanov as an example. He once said at the beginning of summer: “When a meeting ends in Putin’s bunker, five minutes later the transcript is on the table in Western intelligence services.” Therefore, I think that the West will know about it immediately. When did the West announce the plan of our war? By the way, a year has already passed. Therefore, they will be well aware of Putin's intentions,” Zhdanov stressed.

Earlier, Zhdanov said that in the USSR and now in Russia they sport this briefcase indicatively during trips of the country's leaders abroad.

This suitcase has a safe, it has an electronic lock that is triggered by a fingerprint or retina, or both. When you open the suitcase, open the safe, there is a code. The code seems to be attached to the order and then goes down on command. At each stage, this code is checked and some part is added to it. At the final stage, when this code is entered, the operator’s cabin is unlocked, in which the “red button” is located, the “start” button is pressed and the rocket rises from the starting position,” Zhdanov explained.
