Historians Discover One Of First Mentions Of Mass Vaccination On Territory Of Belarus

See what the document looks like.

One of the first mentions of mass vaccination on the territory of our country was found in Belarus: this is a list of parishioners of the church in Pinsk with marks related to the past smallpox or vaccinations against this disease, writes zerkalo.io.

The list of parishioners of the local church dates back to 1834. Opposite the names of people there is a mark about the past smallpox or the vaccination. The document was found by the head of the department for the use of documents and information, Uladzimir Kazlou.

Among the vaccinated are the grandchildren of the owner of the Moladava estate, Symon Skirmunt, a major local industrialist.

It was in those years in the west of Belarus, as experts say, there was another outbreak of a smallpox epidemic. It lasted for about 10 years.

The smallpox vaccination method was developed back in 1798. However, on the territory of Belarus, vaccinations against this disease began only after a few years.

However, the vaccine was of poor quality and for many years it was not possible to cope with the waves of the epidemic.

Only by the end of the 19th century, a special institute and a “smallpox calf barn” were organized in Vilna, where the best quality vaccine was produced. It was supplied to the western provinces of the Russian Empire until 1914.

And then, finally, the vaccination campaign gave visible results and people stopped getting sick with smallpox en masse.
