Political Analyst: The Kremlin Turns to Tougher Instruments of Pressure on Lukashenka

The story with the suspension of oil supplies to Naftan is indicative.

Director of the Center for Strategic and Foreign Policy Studies, political analyst Arseni Sivitski told Radio Svaboda about the possible reasons for the supply cuts of Russian oil to Belarus.

According to Sivitski, the Kremlin has recently realized that it cannot influence Lukashenka using soft instruments - political and diplomatic ones.

- Now, the Kremlin is looking for other levers of influence. I assume they will act tougher; certain economic instruments will be involved," said Sivitski.

In this context, he considers "very interesting" the story about Russia's use of the U.S. sanctions against the Belarusian companies as an excuse to suspend oil supplies to Naftan.
