G7 Countries Call For New Elections Under International Observation In Belarus

The G7 states have supported the democratic aspirations of the Belarusian people.

The G7 countries call on the Belarusian authorities to hold new elections under international observation, as well as to release unjustly imprisoned (both political prisoners and participants in the protests under investigation) for expressing their democratic aspirations.

This is said in a statement issued after the summit of foreign ministers of the G7 countries, held in London. The G7 includes Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, France, Japan and the United States.

"We call on the regime to hold new, free and fair elections under international observation, - the document reads. - We are committed to support the democratic aspirations of the Belarusian people and to hold accountable those involved in human rights abusesЭ.

The G7 countries call on the official Minsk to stop suppressing human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The G7 states also urged Minsk to "enter into a meaningful dialogue with all parts of society, including the current opposition leaders, and accept the OSCE Chairman's offer to mediate in order to resolve the political crisis.

Belarus is already under EU and U.S. sanctions because of human rights violations and falsification of the results of the 2020 presidential election. The regime faces new sanctions.
