What Are They So Afraid Of?
VALERY KARBALEVICH

People hide when they understand well that they are doing something illegal.

The well-known sociologist Max Weber stated that the monopoly on violence is the most important function of the state, which cannot be performed by other organizations and public institutions. However, observing the processes that are taking place in Belarus today, this political science axiom requires a certain correction.

The fact is that those persons who organize political repressions in every possible way hide their belonging to state bodies.

Most of the 30-odd thousand citizens who got into police wagons were detained by unknown persons in unmarked uniforms or even in civilian clothes. They did not introduce themselves and hid their faces.

Interior Ministry officials are anonymous witnesses in courts. Pogroms in Minsk courtyards were also organized by unknown persons. Who, as the story of Raman Bandarenka's tragic death has shown, have carte blanche to kill.

If these people act on behalf of the state, which has a monopoly on violence, why are they disguised as such?

Second point. Violence on behalf of the state should take place according to certain rules, which are called laws in a civilized society.

Formally, there are laws, but in Belarus, they ceased to operate in such situations. None of the murders of the protesters (including Raman Bandarenka) were prosecuted. From the point of view of jurisprudence, the situation is phenomenal: there is murder, but there is no criminal case.

People hide when they understand well that they are doing something bad, wrong, illegal, contrary to the opinion of the majority of the population.

And it is hardly worth believing their statements that they are supposedly saving the country. Indeed, in that case, the people would consider them heroes. And in any society, heroes are publicly honored, their names, portraits shine on the information screen.

Now it is exactly the opposite. They are hidden in every possible way, and they themselves are hiding. They behave not like heroes, but on the contrary, like antiheroes. After all, they understand that they do not personify not only the will of the people but even, in the full sense, the will of the state.

A logical question arises: maybe these people are not acting on behalf of the state?

And here, it is worth paying attention to this circumstance.

The legitimacy of Aliaksandr Lukashenka, to put it mildly, raises serious doubts. It is likely that the security forces carrying out his orders understand this. They subconsciously feel that they are not playing the role of law enforcement but the functions of their boss' personal guard.

And then everything falls into place, and everything is logical. They are not civil servants but members of Lukashenka's team, group, or whatever you call it.
