Landsbergis: Belarusian Civil Society Should Be Invited to Cooperate in the Lublin Triangle Format
Gabrielus Landsbergis

The Lithuanian Foreign Minister discussed this initiative with his Ukrainian counterpart.

Lithuania stands for cooperation with the civil society of Belarus in the format of the Lublin Triangle, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielus Landsbergis said on February 23 in Kyiv at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba. The video recording of the press conference was published on the Facebook page of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, naviny.online reports.

“The Lublin Triangle is a good initiative,” said Landsbergis. "I believe that we should continue to work in this format, and, where possible, we could try to involve the civil society of Belarus in it. Currently, there are not many such political formats for the civil society of Belarus, which is fighting for the possibility of holding democratic elections.”

In turn, Kuleba said that at a meeting with the Lithuanian Foreign Minister, they "discussed the situation in Belarus and the last meeting between Putin and Lukashenka."

“We are both worried, of course, by the situation in Belarus, this is our neighbor, not a foreign country to us,” the head of Ukrainian diplomacy said.

The Lublin Triangle is a trilateral format of interaction between Ukraine, Lithuania, and Poland created by the Foreign Ministers in July 2020 on the basis of recognition of the centuries-old historical and cultural ties between the three peoples. The format emphasizes the role of the three states in the process of shaping the contemporary political, cultural, and social realities of Central Europe.

On August 12, 2020, the Foreign Ministers of the Lublin Triangle countries issued a joint statement in which they expressed deep concern over the situation in Belarus after the presidential elections and called on the authorities to refrain from using force.

“Respect for fundamental freedoms and human rights, including democracy and the rule of law, is essential for the further development of an independent and sovereign Belarus, which we fully support,” the statement said. "We are confident that the current situation can be resolved only through dialogue for the benefit of the people and the state of Belarus. If necessary, we are open to any help to facilitate this dialogue.”
