Lukashenka's Regime Shoots in Its Own Legs

Now hundreds of thousands of revolutionaries will sympathize with millions.

The attack on human rights defenders and journalists looks like nothing more than an imitation of violent activity. Even if all human rights defenders and journalists end up behind bars or leave the country, this will not fundamentally affect the protests.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs generals and the KGB can report to Lukashenka about the "successful operation." At the same time, the protests, temporarily tempered by the people themselves, the authorities attribute to themselves as a victory as a result of the fruitful activity of the "siloviki."

In reality, in conditions of legal default, searches and even arrests of human rights defenders will not stifle protest moods but will make people even angrier.

The money will continue to be transferred to the victims. Will Belarusians have to quickly figure out how to get finances through all kinds of Internet services.

And now the most unpleasant thing for the authorities. Countries of old democracies may take a long time to decide and not be in a hurry to respond to the dispersal of demonstrators and even torture in dungeons. But as soon as there is an attack on journalists and human rights defenders somewhere, the "Alarm!" signal is triggered in the governments of democratic countries, and the red light of serious threat starts flashing.

Once the countries of modern democracies survived their dictatorial regimes, and now journalists and human rights activists are guarantors that dictatorships will never return. And as a result for Belarus, "further sanctions will be adopted unanimously."

The sooner the generals stop living in the past war (in our case, the defeat of the democratic opposition after the 2010 Square), the better it will be for everyone.

Then tens of thousands of those who were ready to protest were sympathized by hundreds of thousands. Now hundreds of thousands - by millions.
