What Do We Know About Person Who Committed Self-Immolation In Independence Square In Minsk?

The 35-year-old Minsker is now in the Republican Burn Center.

35-year-old resident of Minsk Pavel Bankouski committed an act of self-immolation in Independence Square in Minsk. He was taken to the Republican Burn Center, he has more than 50% of burns on his body.

What kind of person is he? Pavel's social networks were not updated often, on the VKontakte page there are several reposts from Nasha Niva and Radio Svaboda for 2015. He also wrote some comments, some in Russian, some in Belarusian.

There are many family photos - with his wife, children. A separate topic is photos from knightly festivals. In the 2000s, Pavel took an active part in them.

The journalists spoke with Katsiaryna Bankouskaya, as it turned out, his ex-wife.

“I don’t understand what’s happening, I’ll go to the hospital now. They told me there that he had no documents with him,” the woman says. She still hopes that this is a mistake.

But if this is really her ex-husband, then what could have caused him to commit self-immolation?

“Recently he has had a difficult period. We've been divorced since August - not for political reasons.

All this could happen, because he seemed angst-ridden that he was letting the family down. After all, he abuses alcohol, and cannot cope with it.

However, I do not have a slightest idea about why he went to the square.”

Pavel worked as a driver. Recently, according to his ex-wife, he lived with friends, then with his mother, then somewhere else.

“I talked to Pavel’s mother - she does not know anything either,” said Katsiaryna Bankouskaya.
