France, Germany and the European Union are trying to push the Belarusian authorities to agree to the OSCE mediation. French President Emmanuel Macron said this on Tuesday at a meeting with students of Vilnius University, Radio Svaboda reports.

“We talked about this with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Our goal now is for such mediation to take place in the coming days or weeks,” the French leader said.

In his opinion, Belarus “needs a process that would ensure a peaceful transfer of power. This would make it possible to recognize all the constituent parts of the country's civil society, to ensure the release from prisons of those who are being held there for their political activities. And to hold free elections under international supervision.

“To this end, we, on the one hand, intend to pursue a policy of pressure on Minsk with the help of sanctions. On the other hand, to conduct a dialogue with Russia, because we will not be able to achieve results here without the participation of President Putin at this stage,” Macron stressed.

“We have already made it very clear since August that we would consider it a mistake and an unacceptable provocation if Russia intervened using the military or police forces. This should remain an internal affair of Belarus, without the interference of its neighbors, and we must all work towards such mediation,” the French leader added.
