US State Department Spokesman Announced Sanctions Against Lukashenka's Regime

Most likely, the sanctions will be introduced tomorrow.

George Kent, US Deputy Secretary of State for European Policy, said in an interview with the Lithuanian newspaper BNS, "We have the first tranche of names prepared. I believe we could expect an announcement next Tuesday."

According to him, the only way to a successful Belarus is a dialogue between the authorities and society, and the countries observing the situation should give space for the implementation of the dialogue.

He called the purpose of the sanctions, "a matter of trying to hold people to account for behavior that violated human rights, norms, and obligations under the OSCE."

Kent claims that the US wants to see Belarus independent, sovereign and successful: "The US respects the sovereignty of Belarus. We think everyone should respect Belarus' sovereignty. We support a free media and so we will certainly look for ways of continuing the free flow of information to Belarusians. We will also look for ways of supporting a healthy economy and prosperous, active, open civil society. That is, I think, a goal that is shared by the USA, Canada, and the European Union."

The diplomat noted that the secret inauguration held in Minsk last week suggests that "proves that the social contract has been broken."
