US Makes Statement On Situation In Belarus

Washington urged the Belarusian authorities not to hinder peaceful assemblies.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said on Monday that the United States is deeply concerned about the situation around the election in Belarus, and calls on the Belarusian government not to obstruct peaceful assemblies, and not use violence against demonstrators, Voice of America reports.

Earlier on Monday, Great Britain expressed concern over the anti-democratic actions of the Belarusian leadership. The spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson also stressed that London considers the violent suppression of protests observed last night unacceptable.

In a joint statement by EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell and European Commissioner for Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, it is noted that the presidential election in Belarus was marred by “disproportionate and unacceptable violence by the state against peaceful demonstrators.”

The European Union must take measures to prevent the use of force by the Belarusian authorities, Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said on Monday.

“The EU must take measures to prevent the possible use of force in Belarus,” Czaputowicz said at the press-conference.

Belarus held presidential election on August 9. The citizens did not recognize the results.
