The politician supported the desire of the Belarusian people to live in a free and democratic state.

President of Latvia Egils Levits made a public comment on the election in Belarus, as well as the protests that took place in the evening and at night.

“I call on the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and other competent international organizations, after listening to all interested parties, to investigate the election - both the pre-election struggle, and the holding of the election itself, and the determination of the voting results, and the events that followed,” says a letter from Levits to Delfi.

The President of Latvia called on international experts “to check the compliance of this election with the standards of free and democratic elections,” giving his assessment on the results.

Levits also called on the law-enforcement agencies of Belarus to release all those arrested during the last election and “respect all human and civil rights and freedoms, including freedom of speech, press, and freedom of assembly.”

“Latvia as a neighboring country of Belarus fully supports the deep desire of the Belarusian people to live in their independent, free, democratic and legal state of Belarus,” Egils Levits stressed.
