European Union's Warning

Brussels has sent a clear signal to Lukashenka's regime.

Watching the course of the Belarusian "elections", Western politicians are becoming more unsparing in their statements. The European Parliament held a debate on international issues and human rights, which also discussed the situation in Belarus, BelGazeta reports.

Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, addressed the MEPs. He expressed concern about the persecution and arrest of election campaign participants in our country.

Andrius Kubilius said that people in Belarus deserve changes after 26 years of Lukashenka's authoritarian rule, and that more than half of the country's population wants changes. He noted that the cultural elite of the country is critical of the authorities' actions, and bloggers have created a real "resistance network." Kubilius urged to outline the EU standpoint by three messages: the first one - to Belarusians about solidarity with them in their desire for changes; the second one - to the Belarusian nomenclature that if the persecution continues, and the political prisoners are not released, sanctions will follow; the third one - a message to themselves that it's necessary to continue defending the rights and freedoms of neighbors.

According to Robert Biedron, the EU policy towards Belarus should have clear "red lines." Petras Auštrevicius noted that public discontent with the policy of the authorities has resulted in protests, while the regime with its repression, intimidation and mass arrests is stuck in the past, so the sanctions against the country have been eased too early. Auštrevicius finished his speech with the words "Long live Belarus!"

At the end of the debate, Borrell said that the EU leadership had already sent a warning to the Belarusian authorities through official channels.
