Lithuanian MPs: Companies Working At BelNPP Should Be Under Sanctions

The Movement against Astravets NPP is collecting signatures under the petition to the European Parliament.

All firms and companies associated with the construction of the Astravets NPP in Belarus should be subject to sanctions on the part of Western countries. This was stated by member of the Seimas of Lithuania Emmanuelis Zingeris at the first congress of the Movement against Astravets NPP, the Charter97.org correspondent reports from Vilnius.

"We must identify all firms and companies involved in the construction of the BelNPP. These companies should be subject to sanctions so that they would never get work on projects in the West," - Zingeris added.

The need for sanctions against the Astravets NPP developers was also stated by Lithuanian MP Žygimantas Pavilionis. The politician says that Lithuania has been countering the construction of BelNPP for many years. Thus, earlier the country had collected over 65 thousand signatures against the Astravets NPP. In addition, the country's parliament adopted a law prohibiting the purchase of electricity from unsafe plants and recognizing the BelNPP as unsafe. "If Rosatom does not listen to us, we will make this construction even more expensive due to sanctions," - Pavilionis says.

Member of the Seimas of Lithuania Audronius Ažubalis called it a mistake to lift the EU sanctions against Belarusian officials and against Aliaksandr Lukashenka in 2016. "It's not too late to stop the launch of the nuclear power plant after allies in Europe are mobilized," - the parliamentarian added.

Now the Movement against Astravets NPP is collecting signatures under a petition to the European Parliament. One of the demands is to call on the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, EU countries and strategic partners to consider sanctions against Rosatom and other companies responsible for the construction of the Astravets NPP.
