EU Will Sharply Increase Economic Support to Belarus After Transition to Democracy

The EU economic plan for a democratic Belarus may be published in December 2020.

The European Union may unveil a comprehensive plan of economic support for a democratic Belarus as early as this month, said Jeroen Willems, Deputy Director General for European Neighborhood Policy and Negotiations on Enlargement (NEAR) of the European Commission, Belsat reports.

Willems spoke at the Minsk Forum online conference on Thursday, December 3.

He noted that the European Union plans to dramatically increase economic support for Belarus in the event of the country's transition to democracy.

"We are ready to increase contacts with the government of Belarus if it goes the right way; moreover, concerning the Marshall Plan for Belarus, we call it "a general economic plan for a democratic Belarus." If there is a transition to democracy, then the EU is ready to significantly, indeed significantly increase support for Belarus," said the representative of the European Commission.

"This general economic plan is being prepared, it is at a fairly advanced stage, and we hope that it will be published this month," added Willems.
