Kastus Kalinouski’s Insurgents Commemorated In Liozna District

A new memorial appeared at the place of death of a detachment of insurgents.

A traditional commemorative event to honour the memory of Kastus Kalinouski’s insugents took place in the village of Pahostsishcha, Liozna district. At this very place, the last battle of the detachment headed by Ihnat Buzdzilovich happened: the rebels got into an ambush, and their commander was captured and shot dead in the Vorsha prison on August 28, 1863, Radio Racyja reports.

A monument appeared here to honour the memory of the participants of the uprising back in 2006 - a concrete cross on a small hill. It was placed there by school teacher Alena Hrachyshnikava and her pupils. A couple of years later, they had to save the monument from demolition, Mrs. Alena recalls:

– When the attitude towards Kastus Kalinouski changed, they told us to dismantle the monument. I said I would not do it - it wasn’t for this that we collected stones, everything here is done with children’s hands. I said me and my pupils did the right thing.

However, in the recent years there appeared some cracks in the monument, although it was repaired several times. Therefore, it was decided to place a new monument nearby, according to Yury Nahorny, the Chairman of the Vorsha Rada of the Belarusian Language Partnership named after Francysk Skaryna:

- It will be a cross and a stone from these places, the Liozna district. We have helped a bit here - we ordered the memorial shield in Vorsha. The old monument remains - we decided not to demolish it so early. So, there are two monuments there now, a sort of succession.

There are almost identical memorial shields on both monuments. On the new one, the years of Ihnat Budzilovich’s life were added, along with the inscription “For Independent Belarus”, as the 22-year-old commander of the insurgents detachment sacrificed his life precisely for freedom and independence.
