The Belarusian authorities have decided to fight with God.

On April 4, the authorities destroyed about 100 crosses that were installed around the perimeter of the memorial in Kurapaty, and on Saturday, April 13, another 50.

This has caused shock, confusion and an outburst of indignation in the society. Vitsebsk activist Khrystafor Zheliapau has commented on the actions of the authorities to Vitsebsk Viasna:

“In my opinion, on April 4, the Christ sellers once again crucified Christ in Kurapaty. Bring to notice that the crosses were not just demolished – they loops were thrown over them, as if they were hung. They thought that by their actions they were fighting with the opposition or with those who had created this memorial. No – they were fighting with God! Therefore, the actions of the authorities should not be regarded as just ill-judged: it is blasphemy and betrayal of Christ. And they will answer for that not before us – before God.

They are not just crosses in Kurapaty – Christian priests and Orthodox believers, whose life the Soviet government took away, lie under those crosses.

Radunitsa is coming. I believe that both Orthodox and Catholics must come to Kurapaty on this day, repent for this blasphemy and honor the memory of the innocent victims...

We remind that the Narodnaya Hramada party, a member of the Belarusian National Congress, called for a new prayer, “Deliver Us From The Evil,” near the administration of Lukashenka (Minsk, Karl Marx Street, 38) on April 15 at 6 pm.

On April 4, authorities demolished crosses around the Kurapaty perimeter.

Activists report that about 100 crosses were pulled down and taken away.

On March 1, at a press conference, Lukashenka expressed dissatisfaction with the crosses around Kurapaty, which can be seen from the road.

One of the leaders of the Belarusian National Congress, Mikalai Statkevich, called for Sunday’s public prayer near the Minsk Holy Spirit Cathedral (Orthodox) at Freedom Square, about 1000 people took part in it.

On April 12, authorities demolished another 50 crosses around the Kurapaty perimeter.
