How come the crosses stood in their way?

On April 4, the authorities destroyed about 100 crosses that had been placed around the perimeter of the memorial in Kurapaty, and on Saturday, April 13, it was the turn of another 50 crosses.

The website Charter97.org asked priest of the Belarusian Autocephalous Orthodox Church Leanid Akalovich to comment on the situation:

- I made a statement from the Belarusian Autocephalous Orthodox Church on April 4. In it, I called the actions of the authorities a mortal sin. When the second vandalism in Kurapaty happened on Saturday, I sent statements to our Grace to Canada.

Father Vikentsiy and I, our believers took part in prayers, went to pray in Kurapaty and defended the stove.

Today we plan to go for a new prayer service. It will take part at 6 p.m. at the Lukashenka administration (Karl Marx Street, 38 - Charter97.org).

We support the protests that have been voiced by all other confessions, outraged by the actions in Kurapaty at the behest of the ruler. Everything comes from this “Orthodox atheist”.What happened is a real vandalism, blasphemy, mockery of the symbols of Christianity. And this all happens on the eve of Easter. We can say that the administration headed by Lukashenka and the performers spoiled the Easter for all Christians.

He disgraced virtually all believers. There is a great sin on him, as well as on the performers of his orders.

I'm going to protest and we will probably organize a procession. We plan to go around the entire national memorial in Kurapaty.

All are outraged by the actions of the authorities. For example, the Polish Embassy declared its outrage. That is, the protest has already taken an international character. The memorial in Kurapaty is generally of international importance. Not only Belarusians were buried and shot there, but also Russians, Poles, Jews. The innocent victims of the Stalinist regime.

I cannot even imagine what this will lead to. What a scandal. It is surprising that the authorities do not back down. So many times head of the Catholic Church in Belarus Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz has spoken about Kurapaty, but there is no reaction. What kind of Satanism stuck in the minds of the government officials? This is a great mortal sin and they probably want their premature death.

- You said that today you will participate in the prayer service. Why do you think this is important?

- Christ on the cross took all our sins. He died for us, and this symbol of Christianity is being destroyed in Kurapaty.

How can you be so two-faced? Go to church, put candles and at the same time destroy the crosses.

You are “cleaning up” in the wrong place. How come the crosses stood in your way? I do not understand what is happening with this power …

I want to appeal to Belarusians and say that we need to pray. God will hear and finally educate these antichrists. They must understand that they went against everything that is sacred for Christians.

We must pray that the Lord would bring them to the right path. Breaking the crosses is breaking the destinies of people. This is some kind of anti-human policy. “The guarantor of stability” turned into a destroyer.

Each person can sin, but then you need to repent, go to church.

It is obvious that the Minsk forestry must return the crosses to Kurapaty.

The Narodnaya Hramada party, which is a part of the Belarusian National Congress, called for a new prayer “Deliver us from the evil one” at 6 p.m. on April 15 near the Lukashenka administration (Minsk, Karl Marx Street, 38).

On April 4, the authorities demolished about 100 crosses along the Kurapaty perimeter.

On March 1, at a press conference, Lukashenka expressed dissatisfaction with the crosses around Kurapaty, which were visible from the road.

At the call of one of the leaders of the Belarusian National Congress Mikalai Statkevich, in the center of Minsk a prayer service took place on April 7, in which about 1,000 people took part.

On Saturday, April 12, the authorities again demolished 50 crosses along the Kurapaty perimeter.
