Nursultan Nazarbayev Resigns
NURSULTAN NAZARBAYEV

The ruler of Kazakhstan made a special appeal to the people.

Ruler of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has resigned the powers of the head of state. He announced this live on March 19 in a special appeal to the nation, Interfax reports.

"I made a decision to terminate my powers as president," said Nazarbayev, speaking to the people of Kazakhstan on the republican TV channels.

"This year it will be 30 years since I have taken the highest post. The people gave me the opportunity to be the first president of independent Kazakhstan," said Nazarbayev.

Speaker of the Senate of the Parliament Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev was appointed Acting President.

Nursultan Nazarbayev has been heading Kazakhstan since April 1990. In April 2015, he was “re-elected” for the fifth presidential term in the early elections.

This year, Nursultan Nazarbayev will turn 79 years old.

According to Medusa, after the resignation, Nazarbayev will head the Security Council of Kazakhstan. He can hold this position till forever. The corresponding decree was adopted by the Parliament in May 2018.

Last year, the Security Council was unexpectedly transformed from a little-known advisory body to a constitutional one. The Council has the power to veto appointments and dismiss key government officials at the central and regional levels.

Nazarbayev will also remain at the head of the Nur Otan party.
