UN Special Rapporteurs Informed About Situation In Belarus

They have been informed about the arrests and trials of participants in the "parliamentary elections".

Lawyers and experts of the Human Rights Center Viasna have prepared and sent an appeal to the UN human rights bodies in connection with the recent repressions against participants in peaceful assemblies held during the election campaign.

The document was urgently sent to the Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, and the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus.

The lawyers informed the UN bodies that a number of participants of the election pickets had already received large fines, one of them - Aliaksandr Krutkin - is serving 15 days of arrest for reposting the appeal for the rally in Kastrychnitskaya Square on November 15. At least 18 people are waiting for the trials for participating in peaceful assemblies.

The HRC Viasna asks to pay particular attention within the UN special procedures to the human rights situation in Belarus, the repressions against the participants of peaceful assemblies during the election campaign.
