Human Rights Defender: Brest Residents Supported Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk
PALINA SHARENDA-PANASIUK

In this situation, the authorities' hysteria has been predictable.

The court of Leninski district of Brest fined the opponent of the battery factory Andrei Slizh 45 basic units (1147.5 rubles).

The administrative case was opened under Part 3 of Article 23.34 of the Code of Administrative Offences (violation of the order of organizing or holding mass events again within a year).

Human rights activist Uladzimir Vialichkin, who was present at the meeting, said naviny.by that Slizh was tried for participating in the legal election campaign of European Belarus candidate Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk, which was held in Savetskaya Street in Brest on October 25. Slizh and another opponent of the battery factory, Aliaksandr Maracheuski, were distributing information materials with the logo "Stop the Plant" about the harmful effects of lead on the human body, as Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk demanded to close the battery factory near Brest in the election program.

"The court wrongly considered this picket illegal. On October 24, Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk was deprived of registration as a candidate by the Brest-Zakhodni District Election Commission №1. However, Sharenda-Panasiuk appealed against this decision and remained in the status of a candidate for deputy until the complaint was considered, - the human rights activist said. - Today's court, I believe, is the revenge of the authorities. They were afraid that Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk had a good chance to win in the district. At the same time, the authorities started to put pressure on the opponents of the battery factory, who continue to strive for the final closing of this hazardous enterprise".
