Reporters Without Borders: Situation With Freedom Of Speech In Belarus Is Terrifying

Human rights activists reacted to the detention of German journalists.

The Reporters Without Borders condemned the actions of Belarusian police officers who detained a film crew of the ARD channel in the center of Minsk.

The human rights organization Reporters without Borders condemned the actions of Belarusian security officials that impeded the professional activities of German reporters in Minsk. This is stated in a message published by the organization on Tuesday, November 12, reports Deutsche Welle.

The situation that happened on November 8 was criticized, when the film crew of the German public-law television channel ARD was about to shoot a report in the center of Minsk. Despite accreditation, the journalists were taken to the police station, where they were held for two hours.

“Such gross obstruction of the work of a properly accredited film crew revealed the dark side of the regime officially working on rapprochement with the European Union,” said Christian Mihr, executive secretary of the organization. According to him, this incident “illustrates the terrifying situation with freedom of press in Belarus.”
