Mass Rally Against Battery Plant Held In Brest

Candidate from European Belarus Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk made a speech at the rally.

A mass rally against the battery factory was held in Brest, a Charter97.org correspondent reports. The action was authorized by the authorities and took place in the park of Soldiers-Internationalists.

More than 300 people gathered in the park 20 minutes before its official start at 13.00.

Candidate from European Belarus Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk together with the initiative group and activists of the campaign also took part in the event.

Candidates for deputies Aliaksandr Pas, Iryna Amel'yanchuk (both candidates are nominated in the Brest Tsentralnaya constituency №2) and Aliaksandr Melnik (the Brest Uskhodniaya constituency №3) initiated the rally.

Shortly after the rally began, the number of participants increased to 400, the Charter97.org correspondent reports.

During the rally, the voters got acquainted with the candidates' election programs, which include a demand to stop the construction and finally close the iPower battery factory near Brest. The need to hold free and genuine elections in Belarus was also stated at the rally.

At the end of the event, the participants adopted a resolution of the meeting:

"We, the residents of Brest and Brest region, participants of the rally "No To Lead Factory!" in support of Iryna Amel'yanchuk, a candidate to the "House of Representatives", gathered here today, on November 10, 2019, to protect the lives and health of our loved ones from the lead threat hanging over Brest and Brest region, given the numerous violations in the design and construction of the iPower Lead Acid Battery Plant, proceeding from the illegality of the location of this lead enterprise in the Brest Free Economic Zone, taking into account 41 thousand signatures of the Brest region residents against the construction of the battery factory near Brest, and proceeding from the Brest citizens' desire not to have such a hazardous lead enterprise near Brest, demand from the government and local authorities to close down the iPower battery factory near Brest!

The rally ended with a speech of Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk, a candidate for deputy from European Belarus civil campaign, who called to come to Kastrychnitskaya Square in Minsk on November 15th, and adoption of the resolution demanding the final closure of the battery plant.
