Lukashenka Seemed To Have Nothing To Do With It
Andrei Sannikov

The reason for cancelling the visits of European politicians is quite obvious.

Why did all the Belarusian "analysts" fizzle out just like that?

Even the most intelligent and informed?

After all, there was a real sensation: the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini had refused to come to Minsk!

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius, one of the most experienced and informed politicians in Europe, had also reported about his non-arrival.

Then they tried to blame it on the non-coming of Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz, who is to attend the funeral of Kornel Morawiecki, the legend of the Polish Solidarity and the father of the current Prime Minister of Poland - the Poles were to blame for everything again!

The last to refuse to come to Minsk was the most loyal friend of Lukashenka recently, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs.

Mogherini's office said with all the Brussels frankness that the trip had been postponed because the plans of some participants in the visit had changed.

Sort of, not just us. A song, not an explanation.

Then they added, in order not to foul up completely, - the decision had been made after contacts with the Belarusian side.

And here I had a real pleasure: to observe how zealously "Belarusian analysts" rushed to justify Lukashenka. He, the wisest, was waiting for them, Europeans, and they could not even agree on their travel plans.

Or, he was in such a hurry to return to Minsk from far away Yerevan, and they decided that he would never get there in time and refused to come.

Or, he would not be able to meet them anyway, because he should be in Zhytomyr (ZHYTOMYR!).

Or that it is humiliating for Lukashenka to meet with resigning Mogherini, and he prefers to meet with the new Borrel.

Or, as one of them managed to say, the arrival of these officials does not matter at all.

Or that it is Europeans themselves who are to blame for creating unbearable conditions for their own arrival in Belarus, "the last dictatorship in Europe," as they mockingly call it.

Lukashenka seemed to have nothing to do with it, since it was the Europeans who refused to go to Minsk.

But he did!

The visits were canceled from Minsk. And the reason for cancelling is quite obvious.

I just wonder who warned the Europeans not to come? Who is this whistleblower?

Anyway, let's keep an eye on Zhytomyr.
