Why do the authorities fear the candidates from the European Belarus civil campaign so much?

Coordinator of the European Belarus Yauhen Afnagel has commented upon the results of registration of parliamentary candidates for the Charter97.org website:

- The European Belarus candidates have been registered in Babruisk, Slonim, Mazyr, Vorsha, and Brest. 5 people are also registered in Minsk. Herein, the authorities denied registration to the strongest contenders, in my opinion, under the most far-fetched pretexts imaginable. These are Iryna Khalip, Maksim Viniarski, Andrei Voynich, and Vasil Zhorau. Iryna Khalip has collected the maximum amount of signatures, approximately 1,500. Around 1,200 of them have been submitted to the Commission. We have checked all these signatures ourselves - there are now flaws! The commission found fault with the fact that the signature sheets were allegedly inaccurate.

Andrei Voynich hasn’t been registered under the formal reason that he had previously been warned. At the same time, the warnings were imposed on him at the time of collecting signatures, and now he tried to register as a candidate from the BPF party. According to the law, this cannot be the reason for the non-registration of a candidate. Maksim Viniarski found himself in a similar situation - the commission claims that one of the documents necessary for registration is missing. Although we rechecked all documents of all candidates 10 times, and all the necessary documents were submitted to the commission. That is, it could only be a deliberate theft of a photocopy of the document.

The fact remains, during the last month the authorities saw how the election campaign went. They saw who was working most actively, who held more pickets than the others, who were the most active in collecting signatures, etc. In addition, everyone knows who Iryna Khalip is, who Maksim Viniarski is, and our other activists who have not been registered. We can say that the authorities were simply afraid to register the most powerful candidates from our campaign. Naturally, in all cases complaints will be filed to the court. We do not have any particular illusions about this, but, nevertheless, we will use all legal methods to prove the illegality of the commissions’ decisions.

Today, the election commissions decided on the registration of candidates from the European Belarus civil campaign.

The meetings of the commissions are scheduled for the last day when it is possible to make a decision on registration.
