Gitanas Nauseda Proposed Additional Measures Against BelNPP

Gitanas Nauseda Proposed Additional Measures Against BelNPP
GITANAS NAUSEDA

Lithuania wants to strengthen the blockade of electricity from Astravets.

"Importing electricity produced in a manner dangerous to the environment and Lithuanian society poses a threat to our national security. Therefore, it is necessary to take additional measures now that would limit the possibility of getting of such electricity on the territory of Lithuania," - the press service of the President quotes Nauseda, interfax.by writes.

According to the press service, the amendments to the law provide for the possibility of immediate revocation of permits to import electricity from third countries, where the nuclear power plant is considered unsafe, and refusal to issue new ones.

In addition, the State Energy Regulatory Service will be able to ask the commission checking transactions of strategic companies to inspect electricity importers, and if it is found that they pose a threat to the national security of Lithuania, the service will be able to terminate the permits immediately, the press service informs.

Belarus is building a nuclear power plant near the town of Astravets in Hrodna region under the Russian project "VVER-1200″. It will consist of two power units of 1200 MW each. The commissioning of the first power unit was scheduled for November 2019, of the second one - for 2020. The general contractor for NPP construction is Atomstroyexport (Rosatom structure). Minsk rejects Lithuania's claims that the plant under construction is unsafe and says that nuclear fuel for the first reactor of the plant will be delivered before the end of this year.

At the end of September, the BelNPP site was visited by Rosatom Director General Aleksei Likhachev, who stated the highest degree of the first power unit's technical readiness.
