More than 200 Orthodox and Catholics took part in the Cross Procession in Kurapaty on April 4. The believers were saying prayers and singing religious songs.

The procession participants were watched by policemen in civilian clothes.

A young priest took part in the Cross Procession. As one of the believers said, their prayers and the office of the day were directly related to the morning events in Kurapaty.

Politician Mikalai Statkevich and his wife Maryna Adamovich, adviser to the ambassador of Poland to Belarus Marcin Wojciechowski, politicians Vital Rymasheuski, Aliaksei Yanukovich were among the participants.

Having read the prayers, the people started the procession with a song, moving down from Golgotha. On the way, they stopped and read prayers. The procession went down Golgotha, read the prayer again.

We remind that in the morning of April 4, eyewitness reported the demolition of crosses in Kurapaty. Authorities demolished 70 crosses.

Some politicians and activists who came to Kurapaty – Pavel Seviarynets, Zmitser Dashkevich, Pilip Shaurou, Dzianis Urbanovich, Nina Bahinskaya – were detained by the riot police. 15 people were detained in total.

The head of the Catholic Church of Belarus, Archbishop Tadevush Kandrusevich, urged to stop to the demolition of crosses in Kurapaty. According to him, the actions of the authorities cause “to put it mildly, bewilderment.”

BOC spokesman Serhiy Lepin told Radio Svaboda that he was surprised that the Ministry of Culture was not aware of what was happening in Kurapaty and that no one commented on why they were demolishing crosses: “This is a cultural monument. And nevertheless, I do not give up hope that this is about the improvement of the monument, and not about its destruction.”
