The demolition of crosses characterizes the authorities as savages living outside of Christian values.

Haradok local historian and Narodnaya Hramada activist Leanid Haravoi believes that Belarusians must show solidarity against the violent actions of the authorities in Kurapaty, Vitsebsk Viasna reports:

“The events in Kurapaty testify: our society remains in the Soviet past. The mythology of the “red man” still dominates Belarus. Residents of the country and its leaders pray the ideas that the civilized world has long refused.

The demolition of crosses characterizes the authorities as savages living outside of Christian values. May God grant them understand of what they are doing, so that they repent and return the crosses to their place.

I believe that the people should oppose life in truth to the ugly deeds of post-Soviet authoritarianism. We must ensure that Kurapaty and similar places remain national symbols. We should be united against the violent actions of the authorities. It is necessary to demonstrate our unity through non-violent resistance, both in Kurapaty and throughout Belarus.”

We remind that the Narodnaya Hramada party, a member of the Belarusian National Congress, called for a new prayer, “Deliver Us From The Evil,” near the administration of Lukashenka (Minsk, Karl Marx Street, 38) on April 15 at 6 pm.

On April 4, authorities demolished crosses around the Kurapaty perimeter.

Activists report that about 100 crosses were pulled down and taken away.

On March 1, at a press conference, Lukashenka expressed dissatisfaction with the crosses around Kurapaty, which can be seen from the road.

One of the leaders of the Belarusian National Congress, Mikalai Statkevich, called for Sunday’s public prayer near the Minsk Holy Spirit Cathedral (Orthodox) at Freedom Square, about 1000 people took part in it.

On April 12, authorities demolished another 50 crosses around the Kurapaty perimeter.
